Some Financial Help

silverman started this conversation

Dear Friends,

I just came across this page and my heart bleeds for each and every one of you.  I have gone through many low points myself and can DEFINATELY feel your pain.  Several years back, I had a collectibles and coin store in Georgia. My customers were not just the rich. Often they were poor people coming in to sell me whatever they believed to be of value. What was most frustrating, was that the items they thought were of the greatest value was often "junk" while they often ended up simply discarding those items of real value. One elderly lady who came into my store told me about an old coin collection she "deposited" at face value at the bank.  She nearly had a heart attack when I told her that the value of her coins was between $750,000 and $1,000,000.  Clearly this is the exception rather than the rule, but I hope that it makes my point.

Some of the items I buy include, but are not limited to:

All stamps/stamp albums
ALL coins (do NOT attempt to clean them)
U.S.A., Confederate and international paper money
Autographs
Old license plates
Comic books (pre-1960s)
Baseball cards (pre-1960s)
Letters & postcards (please leave stamps affixed)
Old legal documents
Propaganda material
War effects & memorabilia
Political items
Medals & tokens
Old sports/theatre programs
Civil War artifacts
Old movie posters

Feel free to email me with what you have.  I will not be able to give you a price over the phone, but I can help you tell the difference between the real junk and the stuff of value.  If I think you have something of value, I will ask you to send it to me.  I will give you what I am willing to pay for it and, if you agree to it, I will send you payment via 2-day priority mail. If you do not wish to sell for my price, I will pay the cost of shipping it back.

What I CAN promise you is that I will pay you a FAIR price for what you have.  I hope that my expertise in collectibles of value will be of help to you.  Just DON'T THROW ANYTHING OUT UNTIL YOU CONTACT ME.  Professional references regarding my integrity and fairness are available upon request.

I hope that I can be of service to you and your families.

John

P.S. I pay a 5% Finder's Fee to anyone who brings me a deal that I end up buying, so make sure to tell your friends.

I have a couple of boxes of old postcards - some that my grandmother collected.  I don't know - are old postcards worth anything?

I have an old Beatle's ring. It has all four pictures of the Beatles on it. What do you think it may be worth. Thinking about listing it on EBay.....

Dear Mr. Silverman, I have a 1962 Seattle World's Fair Plaque. It is black, with a raised scene of the city of Seattle in a gold color. It is round and meant to hang, it has the hook on the back. I do not know if it is worth anything, but it belonged to my grandmother. I also have a 1913 Red Letter Edition Holy Bible. I just wanted to know if these items would be of value?

Mr. silverman , I apologize for being so skeptical , but you are right , many people who are vulnerable by their situation have been scammed . It is nice to see someone like you , who is sincere about helping people. soulight

Dear Friends, At first I was hurt by your comments, as I am an honest man and a legitimate dealer. But given all of the things you have been through, I can't blame you for being skeptical. My store in Georgia was called "The Eccentric Collector." The web address is www.tecwdm.com. If you took your items to a local coin shop (assuming that you have one), they might be fair and they might not. They will likely pay less than I would as they have much higher expenses since they have a store. I have made MANY purchases via the mail, with payment going out within 48 hours. Additionally, most coin shops will not buy stamps and many of the other items I buy. When I receive a lot of collectible, my offer is for ALL of them - not just select items that I cherry pick from the lot. As far as appraisals go, I don't do them - except when someone needs an appraisal for insurance purposes. I just look at the lot and quote a FAIR price. For formal appraisals, I charge $100 an hour. If anyone does need a formal written appraisal, they can always contact me. One of you asked why I can't just go by pictures of the items. The reason for this is that a large part of the value of a coin, stamp or other collectible is CONDITION and whether or not it is GENUINE. Both of these things have a massive influence on value. If you still feel uncomfortable sending items to me, I would be happy to provide references to individuals with something to sell. I look forward to helping out everyone here I can.

This did sound sincere UNTIL he asked for the person to send the collectable to him to see if it was worth something. He could have just asked for pictures. What are the odds that he would send the item back ? You can go to someone local and find this information out without sending something that may be of value to a person that just 'claims ' to be a professional. What was the name of the store in Georgia ? Is he listed on any sites that have coin and stamp items and are professional sites ? Mr. Silverman , if you are real , you have to furnish more proof. We would be fools to send you an item to appraise. soulight

Why do you think this guy is a scam? Do you know something? He sounded sincere to me.
